Broker’s Comments

The Volvo Ocean 65 was developed by Farr Yacht Design in response to the escalating costs and fragility of the Volvo 70 campaigns in the 2012 Volvo Ocean Race.

There was a real need for a more robust yacht that still possessed the sailing characteristics of the Volvo 70 but in a much more durable form, all while keeping costs down. A study on the performances of both yachts showed that the Volvo 65 is only roughly 2-3% slower than a Volvo 70 on the ocean route and significantly more robust.

Recently, after The Ocean Race, the yachts have demonstrated their potential in offshore racing, with two Volvo 65s ranking in the top 5 overall in the 2023 Fastnet race. These were standard yachts in one-design trim. There is a lot of potential for optimization for handicap racing, following the success of the Volvo 70s.

AMBERSAIL, formerly TEAM SCA, underwent a major refit as part of the Volvo 65 fleet refurbishment but did not participate in the race. Since then, she has been involved in Caribbean and coastal racing.

She is the only Volvo 65 that has completed a circumnavigation.

She remains in good condition, well-maintained, and has the advantage of a spare mast in the inventory.
