A true thoroughbred. The lithe, exciting Windy 31 Zonda from the reliable pen of Hans Jørgen Johnsen arrived in 2011, and was an instant success. She was simply epic from the off. She scooped European Powerboat of the Year and Motor Boat & Yachting’s Motor Boat Award. Put simply, she was simply right.
Following some early rough-weather sea trials, Motor Boats Monthly, encouraging our UK press, declared her thus;
“Windy has given us some great day cruisers down the years but now it’s created something far more aggressive. It’s called the Zonda and it is, quite simply, awesome”.
And boating magazine – Motor Boat & Yachting further commented:
“The best hull we have ever tested.”
So why has the award-winning and class-defining Windy 31 Zonda been so incredibly successful?
Offering a pure deep-vee sports boat ride, with weekender practicality, the Windy 31 Zonda could be specified in single or twin outdrive options – all guaranteeing razor-sharp handling and responsiveness. With super-fast passage speeds in adverse weather being achievable in relative comfort, it is little wonder the Windy 31 Zonda is in our, and in Windy’s test driver’s opinion, one of the finest, most complete sports boats ever built. The Zonda was generally built around Volvo Penta’s strong and provably reliable D6 diesel, which grew with the boat – starting at 370HP and ending up at 400HP – so plenty of poke for this sublime hull profile. And no matter how you drove it, the Zonda always delivered – cleaving sharply when asked, never landing wrong when wave-jumping, and built like a tank – so confidence-inspiring…
She is also super-usable. Once on board you understand the simple functionality of the Windy 31 Zonda. Her vast full-beam cockpit can be cleverly and quickly protected by an easily deployed camper canopy system. There are the signature Windy three forward seats, with well-protected seating for her crew and a large sunpad for catching rays. With a wide choice of finishes and options, the boats could be dressed to personal taste and equipped for intended use, using the highest quality materials to ensure durability and longevity. The Windy 31 Zonda’s fully-trimmed cabin features a galley with independent diesel-fired hob, with a separate heads compartment with shower, and a large fixed double berth forward, with plenty of storage and lockers for a weekend away on the water.
Amongst Windy aficionados, the Zonda has achieved near mythic status. The 31 defined a new generation of Windys from her launch, with aggressive lines, massive beam to length ratio, and huge practicality. At time of writing, that she’s is still in production as a near-identical model 12 years later tells you all you need to know.
When it’s right, it’s right.
