The Back Cove 29 is an ideal cruiser for our coasts, attracting plenty of attention due to her handsome DownEaster looks (built up in Rockland, Maine since 2003 – and employing the best of the Maine tradition), spoon bow, and punchy performance. This example was moulded in 2003 and is fitted with the preferred Yanmar 6LPA-STP 6-cylinder diesel engine. Centrally-mounted under a large, hinged cockpit floor, the 315HP block delivers creamy power via a simple, conventional shaft driven 4 bladed propeller, which sits in a concave ‘prop pocket’ in the hull – reducing draft and allowing a much shallower shaft and engine angle.
With a broad set of non-slip decks, plentiful hand rails and easy steps into her aft cockpit, she is very easily worked by a crew of two (or even single-handed) and her current owners have fitted a stern-thruster (that big propeller does like to paddle-wheel a bit) to ensure that berthing her is as easy as it can be. Her helm, and navigator have practically plinthed helm chairs, and indeed the entire helm console is set on hinges to enable excellent access to all controls and cabling. Her hardtop proves plenty of shelter, whilst not impinging on the sight lines from the wheel, and I have delivered several of these cross-channel – and the wheelhouse is a superb environment to inhabit.
Below decks, her interior is practical, yet beautifully finished, with immaculately-varnished American Cherry joinery and cabinetry, easily-cleaned white GRP liners, solid Corian countertops and sensible laminated sole. The main saloon has a comfortable vee-shaped sofa that drops simply into a double berth, the galley is compact (yet has all that you need), with the separate heads sporting a fresh-water flushing electric W.C., and even a shower.

“Practical Elegance. From Maine. Back Cove Yachts, founded in 2003, is a sister company of Sabre Yachts. A group of Sabre dealers requested a smaller Downeast style cruising boat to suit the needs of owners who admired the look and feel of the Maine lobster boat and the dependability and fuel efficiency of a single diesel engine. The Back Cove 29 was launched soon after, and so was a new brand. Today, the two yards are the largest recreational boatbuilding company in the State of Maine where America’s first ships were built on the shores of the Kennebec River as early as 1607.
Utilizing production line method and vacuum infusion technology Back Cove Yachts leads the industry in 30′ to 41′ cruisers. Currently, more than 750 Back Coves can be found in harbors from Greece to Norway and from Japan to Australia and New Zealand. In the USA boats have found their way to almost every body of water from the coasts to inland lakes.
Back Cove Yachts are built by 200 of Maine’s finest boat builders in a modern 240,000 square foot facility in Rockland, Maine. Back Cove associates continuously demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of their role and its influence on the final product. Team dynamics, an emphasis on safe procedures and cross training, and a thorough awareness of each model’s competitive position in the marketplace have enabled are essential ingredients that allow Back Cove yachts to exceed today’s high standards of excellence in manufacturing and design.”
“Don’t let the traditional lines fool you into thinking that the Back Cove 29 is a lobster boat. It may have some of the styling cues and traditional design elements but, that’s where the similarity ends. The Back Cove 29 is a thoroughly modern expression of those famous East coast designs and these days, we have the benefit of the light weight, high revving Yanmar diesel engine, and it is that turn of speed that makes the Back Cove 29 so satisfying to drive.
The Back Cove has excellent engine access. A large section of floor swings up to almost fully reveal the engine and related systems for inspection or service. It’s worth mentioning that the helm binnacle also can be swung completely open, making it simple to service your electronics. The cabin is handsomely appointed with a cherry wood galley that includes an alcohol/electric single burner stove, refrigerator with freezer compartment, a small single galley sink, solid surface countertop and a microwave.
Overall, The Back Cove 29 is a thoroughly modern rendition of a boat whose traditional virtues are well-established and appreciated. Considering the use that many people put their boats to, the Back Cove 29 could be a companion for life–the boat that meets all of your needs, season after season:”
