Broker’s Comments

LUNA was the second Discovery 58 to launch. Like her benchmark sister, the Discovery 55—renowned for two-handed bluewater cruising—she offers a proper deck saloon with interior watchkeeping, a protected cockpit where all sailing functions are managed, and an easily handled furling Solent rig with a self-tacking jib. The Discovery 58 provides approximately 30% more interior volume than the 55, making it a significant upgrade.

LUNA is her current owners’ second Discovery, their first being a Discovery 55. She has proven perfect for summers aboard, easily handled by two people, with ample space and accommodations for entertaining guests. Since purchasing her in 2019, the owners have substantially improved and updated her, with a list of upgrades available upon request. These updates are also reflected in this specification.

LUNA has a comprehensive and continuously updated bluewater cruising specification. With her blue hull, vertical hull windows in the owner’s stateroom, and a beautiful, light, and bright crown oak interior, she looks stunning and is a joy to spend time aboard.

Owner’s Comments

We were looking for a family cruising sailboat in 2007, and after two years of searching, we found our dream yacht in England: a Discovery 55. We cruised the Med for two years and could not have been happier. She was a safe, fast, and comfortable yacht, and being a deck saloon, we had the enviable luxury—while being at sea or at anchor—of seeing the world go by. When we decided on our second adventure in 2017, we did not think about it twice; we headed back to England for another D55. We looked at several, but our attention was drawn to the newer D57 and D58 models. Could we afford them? Could we handle them with just two people? We very much liked the added volume the additional three feet afforded and the deck layout, with its two-pedestal setup, which provided ease of entry and exit and a very comfortable, practical, and safe cockpit area—we were now a few years older. We also looked at other brands, but the confidence gained and comfort from our first Discovery experience was hard to break. We bought LUNA in 2019.

With a few lucky breaks and a chance meeting with another Discovery owner, we ended up based in Palma de Mallorca. With our base in Palma and a desire to return, we sailed regularly around the Balearics and Sardinia, with longer forays to the Aeolians, Sicily, and Greece. In 2020, we decided to go back to England/Berthon for a mini refit. Although the engine was fine, we completed some suggested upgrades (some parts did not need replacing yet but would be something to contend with later on), updated electronics (instruments, radar, FLIR camera, etc.), solar panels for passive charging, a new North Sails gennaker, all new biminis, covers, and awnings (a must for the Med), and a number of odds and ends that would help keep LUNA shipshape. We are firm believers, gained through experience, that preventive maintenance and upgrades lead to a happier and safer time aboard. Our priority is maintenance and thoughtful, informed use of the yacht.

After five years of sailing LUNA, we could not be happier or more confident that we made the right choice. Discovery made wonderful yachts, and we consider ourselves lucky to have owned two great examples of their workmanship. This did not stop us from improving upon their great work to make our cruising as enjoyable as possible. I can say that the D58 is a wonderful shorthanded sailboat with a great layout that both we and our guests truly enjoyed. Also, as a side note, we have never received so many compliments on a yacht. Importantly, for any owner, you need to look back at your yacht and make sure it puts a smile on your face—LUNA did that and more for us. The D58 is indeed roomier and more comfortable, but I think what I truly began to appreciate was that the added displacement over the D55 made for a very sea-kindly, comfortable, and safe sailboat; rough seas were not an issue. There’s nothing like 20-25 knots of wind on the beam for a truly amazing sail, or 7-12 knots with the gennaker up for a peaceful and fast glide through typical Western Mediterranean weather. We also stayed at anchor for weeks on end. The solar panels reduced our generator time, and our DC watermaker was quiet, reliable, and kept our water tanks full, leaving only the task of provisioning, which was always something to look forward to in the Med.

Very sadly, we are selling LUNA because family obligations and other priorities are making it harder to spend six months in the Med. This is a significant investment for us and represents a lifestyle we loved and prioritized, but we are now finding it more difficult to keep everything together and everyone happy. So now, it is time to pass LUNA along so she can continue bringing smiles to those who appreciate a great sailing yacht.

For peace of mind, I would like to highlight that Discovery Yachts were made to the highest standards with top-of-the-line equipment. Although Discovery Yachts, as a manufacturing enterprise, is no longer with us, I have never had any problems whatsoever sourcing parts. For technical support and advice, I have always relied on the very knowledgeable team of Sue Grant at Berthon and John Eustace, an extremely knowledgeable ex-Discovery Yachts employee who has teamed up with Berthon and can resolve any issue or provide advice on all things Discovery.
