The hugely successful Moody DS54 is now approaching 100 hulls, and it is easy to see why. Like all Moody deck saloon yachts, it features the signature ‘one-level living’ concept, with the saloon and cockpit flowing seamlessly together through large sliding glass doors.
The deck is secure and well-designed, featuring high bulwarks topped with a solid handrail all around. Aft, a hydraulic-opening transom reveals a spacious dinghy garage. The twin helm positions are equipped with large pedestals, providing ample room for push-button sail controls, engine controls, 12” plotters, and bow and stern thruster controls.
Despite their size, these boats—with powered sails and both bow and stern thrusters—are easy to handle for a couple or even to single-hand!
Inside, starting from the forward section, there is a spacious owner’s cabin with a centerline bed, ample backlit hanging lockers, drawers, and storage at the foot of the bed. It includes a vanity table with a stool and space for a built-in TV, if desired. This cabin also has an ensuite head and a stall shower.
Moving aft, there are two well-sized double-berth guest cabins, along with a head and stall shower shared by both cabins, with direct access from the port cabin. A centerline staircase, with ample storage underneath, leads up to the deck saloon.
In the standard configuration, the saloon seating is to port, wrapping around an extendable table, with the chart table to starboard. Aft of this is the U-shaped galley on the starboard side, and opposite is space for additional fridges, a microwave, and a pop-up bar. A second set of stairs leads down to the aft twin-berth cabin and a third head with a handheld shower. If desired, a washing machine can be installed in this compartment.
The engine compartment is accessed from the saloon sole and contains the engine, air conditioning, generator, and other technical components. It is well-insulated, keeping noise levels low when running the engine or generator.
The 54s offer several layout configurations, including a galley-down version, and can be fitted with either a standard or shallow keel. A bow thruster comes standard, while a stern thruster is optional. Twin powered headsails are typically selected, complementing the electric in-mast furling main and electric winches.
The Moody DS54 is an excellent sailing boat, with several having competed in the Sydney Hobart Race, the Bermuda Race, and the Marblehead to Halifax Race. It is also a fantastic ‘lifestyle’ boat, featuring a spacious, comfortable cockpit, deck cushions, and high bulwarks to keep young children (or dogs!) safely on board.
