The Sparkman and Stephens Swan 55 is a legendary yacht – second only to the S&S Swan 65 – they are considered one of the most attractive, high quality and top-class sailing yachts of their day (and also, by many, of today!).
Swan 55 number 012 Tauranga (now Gandalf) and 55-013 Walross III both participated in early Whitbread Round the World Races. However more recently, a close sister S&S 55 yawl Galliana, sailed the 2023-24 Ocean Globe Race, proving that these yachts are still tough, fast, go anywhere yachts.
SWAN VALHALLA is hull number 55-016. She was the last S&S 55 delivered (almost 3 years after 015).
She is a yawl rig version. Her first name was Travel. The first Swedish owners were serial Swan owners. Prior to the 55, they had, to my knowledge, a 43 and a 48. Subsequently they owned an S&S 65 and a 76.
Since her first owners, she has passed through several owners since and many upgrades and refits – but has always been loved as well. She has cruised, chartered and raced.
A new owner may choose the course he wishes to sail in future – whether this be continuing her role as a Med based family sailing yacht, making ocean crossings, Ocean Racing or competitive sailing at events like the Swan Cup, St Tropez or Argentario Sailing week, and the like (or all of the above!).
We chose SWAN VALHALLA as she is classic and perfectly sized, a beautiful ex S&S racer with great pedigree. At sea trial she sailed in 22 knots wind with all sails up and no reef. We wanted a pedigree racing boat for Fastnet, Arc, Caribbean 600 and Swan Rolex Cup combined with a great long distance cruising boat.
She handles beautifully and very comfortably in strong winds. As these conditions are becoming more frequent this kind of long deep keeled classic racer is the perfect boat. No reef is required until 21-22 knots wind speed when close hauled. She will cruise at 8-9 knots in 20 knot winds very comfortably, and at 7-8 knots in anything above 15 knots with full set of sails and no reef.
Previous owners chartered SWAN VALHALLA and Swan GALLIANA for match racing and sail training. Many admirers stop by to say they have done their RYA yacht masters on a transatlantic passage or in the West Coast of Scotland.
Here are some regattas and events that SWAN VALHALLA took part in: Swan Guernsey Regatta 2011, Fastnet 2012, ARC 2013 (lying first position after 40-50 knot windstorm), Caribbean 600 2014, Swan Rolex Cup Sardinia 2017.
SWAN VALHALLA was moored in Beaulieu River 2010-2013, in English Harbour in Antigua 2013-2015
Beaulieu River again in 2015. She cruised from the Solent to Mallorca in 2016, and has been in Porto Petro, Mallorca on a swing mooring since 2016. We totalled over 10,000 total miles of passage making, not including short trips in the Balearics and circumnavigation of Mallorca.
We now have other family commitments and share other boats. We have owned her together for 14 wonderful years.
